Description
Hearty cowboy baked beans made with tender navy beans, seasoned ground beef, and a smoky-sweet sauce. This halal-friendly, no-alcohol version replaces bacon with a savory alternative for bold, family-approved flavor and texture.
Ingredients
2 (15 oz) cans canned navy beans, drained and rinsed
1 pound ground beef
1/2 pound halal bacon substitute (e.g., plant-based or turkey bacon), cooked and drained
1 medium yellow onion, diced
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 cup smoky barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons mustard (Dijon or yellow)
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon ground mustard seeds
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon paprika (smoked optional)
2 tablespoons reserved fat from bacon substitute
Instructions
Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C)
Cook halal bacon substitute in a Dutch oven over medium heat until crispy. Remove and drain most fat, reserving 2 tablespoons
Add onion, garlic, and mustard seeds to the same pot. Cook until onions are softened
Add ground beef and cook until browned
Stir in drained navy beans, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, mustard, paprika, bay leaf, and reserved bacon fat
Bring to a simmer, then transfer to oven. Bake for 1 hour 25 minutes, stirring occasionally
Remove bay leaf before serving
Notes
Use plant-based bacon or turkey bacon for halal compliance
For extra depth, toast mustard seeds before adding them to the recipe
Let rest 10-15 minutes before serving for tighter bean texture
